Guests for Saturday, April 16th Arts in the Family are Encarnacion Ruiz, Director of Admission for UC Merced, and Janalynn Castillo, Associate Director of Public Affairs for Planned Parenthood’s Mar Monte district, which includes San Joaquin County.

Encarnacion Ruiz has been the Director of Admission for UC Merced since 2004. Encarnacion is a native of Goshen, California in Tulare County. He is one of eleven children. He attended schools at the College of the Sequoias in Visalia and earned a BA in Social Welfare from California State University, Fresno.

Prior to being the Director of Admission, he worked for the University of California, Office of President as Director for Relations with Schools.

He has twenty-five years of experience with the University of California in student outreach, recruitment and admissions.

His professional goal is to create greater access in higher education especially for the students in the San Joaquin Valley.

Janalynn Castillo is associate director of public affairs for Planned Parenthood’s Mar Monte district, which includes San Joaquin County.The Merced clinic offers preventive services such as breast cancer screenings, birth control, sexually transmitted infection tests and treatment, family planning and sex education, among other services. Abortion services aren’t offered.

The center had more than 13,000 visits during the 2009-2010 fiscal year. Castillo said about 96 percent of them were visits for family planning and reproductive health.
