Adilah Barnes is one of few veteran actors in Hollywood that have not only mastered the art of successfully marketing herself, but also of utilizing all of her many creative skills – all the while staying true to herself and maintaining her integrity. She has guest-starred most recently in NBC’s series Harry’s Law and Prime Suspect, ABC’s popular series, The Middle, CBS’ well-received Cold Case, and TNT’s Trust Me. Barnes has been fortunate in landing roles that come close to who she really is – a woman of enormous strength, steadfastness and grit on a mission to teach us about life, history and the rewards of perseverance. Her role opposite Hilary Swank, as the infamous Ida B. Wells in HBO’s Iron – Jawed Angels demonstrated this. As Ida B. Wells in Iron Jawed Angels, Barnes marched for women’s rights and ironically, in real life she is also a marcher and supporter for women of every ethnicity.

Ms. Barnes has also extensively toured her own one-woman play, I AM THAT I AM: WOMAN, BLACK, a historical journey into the lives of seven renowned women: Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Mary McLeod Bethune, Zora Neale Hurston, Lorraine Hansberry, Angela Davis and Maya Angelou. I AM THAT I AM: WOMAN, BLACK, now in its twentieth season, has toured three continents including 40 states across the U.S, Africa, Europe and the Caribbean.

As a writer, Adilah released her first book, ON MY OWN TERMS: One Actor’s Journey in December of 2008. ON MY OWN TERMS received the #3 non-fiction paperback rating in Essence Magazine’s June 2009 issue following President Obama’s two books. She also founded in 2007 The Writer’s Well, an international literary writer’s retreat for women located in a very beautiful, woodsy and serene environment in the Atlanta area. Her retreat has attracted writers from as far away as Ghana.

Adilah Barnes is the Co-Founder of the Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival, an annual, multi-cultural festival that showcases female artists in the disciplines of dance, music, theatrical performances, spoken word and comedy that has produced well over 400 artists and is now in its seventeenth year. Both The Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival and Ms. Barnes, individually, were honored with the prestigious Women in Theatre Award in 2006.

Mike Sell is Professor of English and member of the Graduate Program in Literature and Criticism at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of The Avant-Garde: Race Religion War (Seagull Books 2011) and Avant-Garde Performance and the Limits of Criticism (University of Michigan 2005), and editor of Avant-Garde Performance and Material Exchange: Vectors of the Radical (Palgrave Macmillan 2010) and Ed Bullins: Twelve Plays and Selected Writings (University of Michigan 2006). Avant-Garde Performance and the Limits of Criticism looks at the American avant-garde during the Cold War period, focusing on the interrelated questions of performance practices, cultural resistance, and the politics of criticism and scholarship in the U.S. counterculture. This groundbreaking book examines the role of the scholar and critic in the cultural struggles of radical artists and reveals how avant-garde performance identifies the very limits of critical consideration. The First Annual Run for the Fallen Fort Ord 10k was established to honor the sons of Monterey who gave their last full measure of devotion to their country in the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The race course, which is in the newly established Fort Ord Dunes State Park, is a rolling 10K that offers fast times and magnificent views of the Monterey Bay and the Monterey Peninsula. All proceeds from the event will go to charities dedicated to honor the memories of the fallen or assisting the men and women returning from war.

Having an STD has not hindered my love life, inhibited my ambition, or limited my friendships (I’ve been married, auditioned for American Idol, gone skydiving 3 times, been an auditor for a Big 4 accounting firm, ran a 25k, started a successful business, worked as a ‘carny’ on a fried veggie wagon, completed 2 degrees, etc.). Herpes, in short, has not stopped me from achieving anything or enjoying my life.
I am here to tell you, having an STD/STI does not have to stop you either.

Kim McMillon, the host of Arts in the Valley interviews Heike Hambley, the Artistic Director of Merced Shakespearefest, the only free outdoor Shakespeare festival in Merced County.

How the Merced Shakespeare Festival was born by Heike Hambley.
I love Shakespeare and all his characters, the lovers, the fools, the witches, the witty servants, the warriors and the timeless poetry. I also love Shakespeare festivals and Renaissance fairs and theatre and working with people to put on a finished production everybody can be proud of and have fun with.

Merced’s own Shakespeare festival was born out of these sentiments and helped by a successful production of “Twelfth Night” that I directed for Merced Center for the Performing Arts, now Playhouse Merced, in February 2002. Cast and crew had so much fun that at the cast party some of us decided to explore the possibility of bringing a Shakespeare festival to the whole community. Wonderful Shakespeare enthusiasts like Michael Egan, Julianne Aguilar, Carolyn Hart, and others brainstormed and discussed and worked hard. Three months later we had raised some money from generous friends, relatives and art lovers, got rehearsal space from the Playhouse, a non-profit umbrella from the Merced Arts Council and had rented the rarely used Merced Open Air Theatre in Applegate Park. This stage is a perfect Shakespearian space, wide open with pillars on both sides, a lot of sun and natural light for the performers, but green grass and shade trees for the audience. http://www.mercedshakespearefest.org/contact.htm

John Curl is an American poet, memoirist, translator, author, activist, and historian.

He is author of seven books of poetry, including Scorched Birth (2004), which former San Francisco poet laureate Jack Hirschman called “a book of wonders.” His best known book is probably his history of the cooperative and communalist movements, For All The People: Uncovering the Hidden History of Cooperation, Cooperative Movements, and Communalism in America (PM Press, 2009), which historian Howard Zinn described as “inspiring.” Memories of Drop City (2007) is his memoir of the 1960s communal movement and the first “hippie” commune, in Colorado, where he lived between 1966-69, which Ishmael Reed called “highly crafted and brilliant,” and Al Young described as “compelling.” His play The Trial of Christopher Columbus was produced by the PEN Oakland Writers Theater in Berkeley (2009). His poetry books include Columbus in the Bay of Pigs (1991); Decade (1987); and Tidal News (1982); and has published poems in numerous magazines and anthologies, including Words Upon the Waters, Oakland Out Loud, Blake Times, Left Curve, Central Park, Poetry USA, Anthology of East Bay Poets, Poetry Flash, and Pulse of the People. He was a member of the San Francisco Cloud House circle of poets in the 1980s.
